I don’t want to steal the limelight from Endian’s awesome Valentine’s Day post, but I have awesome news. The ReBoot movie is a definite go. I know this because Paul Gertz (head of Rainmaker Animation) just called and invited me to pitch script ideas!
That’s right - on Monday, February 25th at 10:30 AM, I will pitch ideas to Rainmaker for the new ReBoot movie(s). I say “movie(s)” because I forgot to ask how many movies they intend to make. I remember Paul saying they wanted to make a trilogy but I’m not sure that’s still the plan.
Paul told me that he’s inviting several other established writers to pitch as well, so once I again I must go toe-to-toe with my peers. However, I’m feeling a little more confident this go-round; I seriously doubt there’s many other writers out there who’ve been as steeped in ReBoot for the last 6 months as I have - who have as keen an insight into the characters, genre, world, and fanbase as I have.
Furthermore, I’ve got an ace up my sleeve: I know where the ReBoot comic is going and can possibly tie that into the pitch. None of the other writers can do that. Even so, I’ve got a lot of work ahead of me and not very much time (10 days).
Life just got busy again, and not a moment too soon: I was starting to get antsy.
Wish me luck, folks!

Ooo, this is SO exciting! I don’t know what else to say. See if you can find out if it’s really going to be a trilogy the next time you get a chance.
I would certainly love to see you on the writing team. You’re obviously well versed in Reboot in many respects. ^^ But do you know if any of the original writers will be having any input?

I don’t know if the original writers have been invited. I somehow doubt it. Man, I’d love to spitball with those guys…

citrus-flavored photon? Maybe *you* should write the movies.
Comment by WhizzyWig | February 15th, 2008 @ 5:24 pm
This is sweet. I know that there is a chance that another writer could get their pitch picked, depending on what Rainmaker is looking for in a plot. But I know that you have all the fan support and the advantage of being the writer of the comic, so I’m happy. And wow, on the 25th already. My birthday is on the 24th so I’ll use my birthday wish in your favour of winning, Prof.
Good luck.
Comment by Jester17 | February 15th, 2008 @ 5:53 pm
What a Happy Birthday present! I mean you are the one getting the chance to do this but your seeing them on my birthday so you’ll be in my thoughts Professor! God Bless!
Comment by DivineRoseBoot | February 15th, 2008 @ 6:12 pm
Woot! Fantastic news indeed, Prof - my heartfelt congrats and wishes that you guys have a role in shaping the films.
Here’s my pitch fro script ideas - lots of Enzo, and don’t let the bastards kill him off like they talked about! Follow that and you can’t go wrong.
And please, no repeats of S3 where the classic characters are either barely there (Enzo, Mouse) or unrecognizable (Dot).
Comment by Guardian Enzo | February 15th, 2008 @ 6:14 pm
Aren’t you talking about season 4 Guardian Enzo?
This is awesome news! What I’d like to see is you writing the movies WITH the original writers. It just wouldn’t be the same without the original staff…

Guardian Enzo: Ha ha, yeah, get it all out right now. I’m already scribbling ideas in my notebook, so if you want some input better start posting NOW.
No killing Enzo - check!
No ignoring main characters - check!
No making main characters looks stupid - err, well I’ll see what I can do. Not really my department - unless they make me a producer!

On that note, since you asked…
Let Ray talk
More Enzo-Matrix bonding/conflict. MUCH more!
No more Bob clones, please
Give Bob back his ‘nads
Give Matrix some Prozac
Lots of AndrAIa being the coolest chick in the net

Ahhhh!
SO exciting.
I really hope that you are chosen. Quite frankly, I as a fan wouldn’t trust anyone else to be involved. This team has really taken into consideration what the fans want to see in the character and art presentation. I just remember how some of the other comic book pitches made our characters look like and act like and it just makes me cringe.
Do you think the movie would also involve fans like the comic has?
I’ll be praying they vote in your favour!
Comment by TarienTelanor | February 15th, 2008 @ 9:27 pm
By the User… It’s like upgrade day came early this cycle!
Having been a fan since the show first came out, and reading all this about the comics, and seeing all the fan support of it, I am so thrilled that Rainmaker is picking up ReBoot again. Will they produce it under the Rainmaker name, or shift back to Mainframe?
Congrats to the entire team, and a giant Bravo to the Professor on a job well done. ReBoot could not be in better hands.
With the way all this is progressing, are you thinking about keeping the movies and the comics separate, or integrating them like the Halo franchise has done, with the story gap between H2 and H3 being filled by comics (Halo Uprising)?
Words cannot describe my joy, and neither can binary- or hex-code.

Very exciting news! I too would feel it would be a good idea if the original writers and creators were brought on board. First off, this looks like a big vote of conficence for the comic series. Earlier you mentioned the discussion of a graphic novel collecting the ReBoot comic and the marketing thereof. Now they are confident enough to take the first steps toward a movie. YES.
Are the movie pitches going to duke it out in the arena the way the comic pitches did? (I doubt it, but I’m not firm in my doubtingness.)

wow new films! Sorry if I’m clueless but are they being done by the original people? in any way? If not I think it will lose some of the magic it once had. I hope this doesn’t tuen out to be a Knight rider/Knight Rider 2000 deal where the new series is just rubbish compared to the old one.
I wanna see all the old characters again, the main characters and the random number sprites walking through mainframe. Id also love to see them do film skits too, they were brilliant in the old series.
Great news anyway, I cant wait to see something of it.

Alright this just made my day
i can’t believe its actually coming back because i’ve been waiting forever. You guys should stick with the original character animations, don’t go with the comic like character designs. , which totally killed what i was thinking. Well in general leave all the character appearances as they were from seasons 3-4.

I believe the movies will be computer animated, but everything will receive a bit of a face-lift. Fret not, though - with all the new technology at our disposal, a ReBoot movie that looks as good as the Final Fantasy movie is certainly possible.
Comment by WhizzyWig | February 17th, 2008 @ 10:55 am
New ReBoot movies?! So soon?! Awesome, just awesome. I think that with the new technology, it would be possible to make ReBoot more life-like while still retaining everything about the characters that we know and love. I would hope that Gavin and Ian would be given some say in all of this. After all, they are the ReBoot Godfathers.

Here’s an idea (and I hope it’s not too late): what about an AI-game-sprite revolution? We haven’t seen another one since AndrAIa, and there’s nothing stopping other AI’s from copying the way she escaped the game, right?
Imagine it. AndrAIa enters a game to find it’s the one she left behind all that time ago, where another AI, who witnessed her initial escape and always wondered if it worked, decides to finally try it himself. So he paralyzes someone, and attaches a back-up of himself to their icon. Presto-change-o, he hides until he can get into another cube, tells other AI’s how to do it, who go into other cubes, then other cubes…
They don’t have to be nice, like AndrAIa.
We could meet the AndrAIa who stayed in the game (’cause it was a back-up she attached to Enzo’s icon). She’d be older then our AndrAIa now and maybe, even, driven by bitter resentment to start the revolution herself.
We could find out about AndrAIa’s feelings about leaving behind her home-game. Plus, it would be a movie with a butt-load of cool-looking characters.
Sorry, if this isn’t the type of idea you’re looking for.

Gah, this is why I hate not having internet, I miss announcements like this! Ah well, it’s not like it’s any less awesome. Huzzah for new ReBoot! I would hope that the original writers would have at least have some input into any new movie, if not be on the writing team, but if that’s not gonna happen then I’m definitely rooting for you guys.
As always, my main desire for the movies would be ‘more Mouse’ but that’s generally my desire for anything ReBoot-related.

Comment by ShinyHappyGoth | February 18th, 2008 @ 9:39 am
This is so awesome! I didn’t want to get my hopes up, in case something fell through, but now I can whip out the can of “Whoo-hooo!!!” I can’t wait! However, keep the old characters (I will refuse to watch if you don’t pick up where things left off, okay, I’ll watch…but I’ll mock profusely), and don’t let Dot suck as much as she did in season 4. And bring hex back. And the show down better be between Megabyte and Bob (as much as I love Matrix, this whole “I’m a bad ASCII and must steal the limelight all the time” gets old after a while). And yes! More Mouse and Ray! And give Enzo a playmate.
I wrote this fanfic when i was too young and inexperienced about Bob and Dot going to the web to round up some Web Riders to fight against Megabyte and his many Alias. I wonder if they are going to pick up things where they left off in the Reboot Story line.

Ok I have been a fan of ReBoot since the beginning. I was really dissapointed when it all seemed to end in a cliffhanger. The original episodes were genius. The 2 movies of season 4 were also good but I didn’t like how the artwork changed and the characters personalities weren’t spot on anymore. All their faces had the same shape… kind of puffy and silly. And the beginning of “my 2 bobs” was obscene. Anyway, despite all this I tried to come up with how things would play out after the annoying cliffhanger. I figured that because they were able to turn Hex into a sprite, they should find a way of doing the same with Megabyte. They would have to drain his energy, give him a PID and then do a viral scan. Next they need to take Meg’s code and give it to Welmen so that he will have all of the code of what destroyed him and he can be brought back. It is the same with games. The game that nullifies the sprite can also bring it back. The virus that nullifies the sprite can be used to bring him back. Once Welmen is a sprite again he can use his code to cure all other sprites that were nullified by Meg and Hex. Hopefully this will lead guardians all over the net to work towards turning viruses into sprites instead of trying to delete them. Bob will be the one leading this. He and Dot also have to forgive eachother and themselves, esp Dot. Also, it is weird having 2 Enzo’s around and I have a solution to this aswell. Little Enzo should go to the academy and become a full fledged guardian like Matrix never had the chance to. He can help with Virus transformation projects. And of course eventually Bob and Dot have to get married but they probably won’t have a big ceremony this time. They should just elope to Los Angles or something. Please let me know if or how any of these things will pan out in the new season. I just discovered today while surfing the net about this ReBoot revamp. I just wanted to let you know that if you need an expert to pass ideas by, I can help. Just email me. I know nearly everything there is to know about the original series. Alright. Hope to hear from you. It’s really great that ReBoot is coming back. Hopefully this will intoduce the show to a new generation of people. - Kelly

Prof WW: I dunno about Queen of the Hackers, because with authority comes responsibility. I don’t think Mouse would be particularly interested in the former, and certainly wouldn’t want the latter. Plus there’s only one Queen in ReBoot, and it’s not the girl that’s not Hex!
SHG: While Mouse is a mercenary and likes to wander, I do think she’s developed a fondness for Mainframe and the Mainframers, it’s the closest thing to a home that she’s got. As long as they need her around, whether it’s for hacking skills, combat skills or stopping Dot going crazy, I think she’d stay.
Comment by Jen Kollic | February 19th, 2008 @ 5:05 am
As long as they need her around, yes. At the end of season 4, when it looked like they no longer did, she was about to take off. That’s what I’m saying: if there’s a point in plot where everything once again looks safe and settled, she’d probably want to depart.

Time is always on our side. Took long enough, but the movies will take the cake on the series.
In the reading of posts I keep seeing different pitches for the movies. When it comes down to it, more than anything the cliff hanger must be finished. After that there can always come changes. New characters, reflect on old ones, but just as long as all the regulars are there i.e. dot, bob, matrix, andraia, mouse, even ray. Killing off Enzo isn’t THAT bad of an idea. I’m just not sure what the target audience is, old fans and adult new ones, or bring it back to a kids show. It just seems like there is no true tragedy in the show, everyone is still there and Enzo just seems like a loose end. How about something in the final movie about discovery or interaction with Users?? They are always brought up but how about the Mainframers discovering everything out. Like at the end of the 4th season when the system crashed and the User restarted?
Like they always say, “tried but true”. There is a reason this show has such a large following.
I plan on getting an Andraia tattoo on my arm, please don’t ruin it for me.

I’m interested…
Comment by WhizzyWig | February 22nd, 2008 @ 4:52 pm
I’d like Enzo removed too, though now it would be hard to just kill him off… I think he should never have been brought back in the first place. I don’t like it when they make clones like that: 2 Enzos, 2 Bobs,… The characters are losing their sense of uniqueness. At least Bob 2 turned out to be Megabyte and not really a copy of Bob. Maybe they should have cloned Bob: one Bob for Dot, one Bob for Mouse, one Bob for Al’s waiter, one Bob for that “I love you” binome in AndrAIa and 20 Bob for Hex, one for each mood.
Comment by etoile37 | February 22nd, 2008 @ 7:44 pm
Noooo! I like little Enzo! He is teh cute! *hugs and protects him from the big meanies*
Anyway, you think having two Enzos makes the character lose his (their) uniqueness? Then show how they diverge! They started the same, but they don’t have to remain so, nor are they likely to. That gives you a whole different level of uniqueness: uniqueness in spite of identical origin.
Comment by ShinyHappyGoth | February 22nd, 2008 @ 8:17 pm
Enzo is actually my favorite character. I think Enzo can be shown to be different from Matrix.
When I saw Batman Begins the first thing I thought when I saw Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne I thought that could be Enzo. What is interesting is Christopher Nolan said he didn’t what Bruce to be all buff because that was against his character; he put brains before brawn.
I think once the comic is done Enzo will be able to become his own person.
Also you have to remember they live in a computer, copies are more normal to them than clones are to us.

I know a lot of people think Enzo is annoying, but I think he’s just become too much a part of ReBoot to be taken out in any significant way. He adds a different dynamic to the show than any of the other characters, even if it is a hyper, slightly-less-mature dynamic.
But when we see him forced to grow up fast, for both Megabyte and Daemon, it shows an important loss of innocence. I like him a lot. We need the kid!

My main problem with Enzo is… Well, let me make a list.
1) We already have Enzo. His name is Matrix, and he’s about three times as awesome.
2) Kid Enzo is annoying in the -worst possible way-. e.o Seriously, I know some people think he’s cute, but to me… Gah. He just grinds my gears. Like nails against a chalkboard. For prolonged periods of time. And I admit part of it was his voice, new Enzo (Or at least what we’ve seen of him) doesn’t seem quite so bad.
3) My main thing is, we have two Enzos, and they’re both looking to stay around… I’d be okay with keeping Enzo in there, as long as he grew up up on his own to a Matrix-level sprite, and was significantly different than Matrix. That way neither are annoying, and we still have the dichotomy of having two significantly different versions of the same sprite.
4) … He’s annoying. Again. ^^;
So the upshot is, I want him either killed or grown up to a different sprite. Because with the addition of Matrix, having a him and a kid Enzo just throws the whole balance of the show off.

“Enzo is actually my favorite character. I think Enzo can be shown to be different from Matrix.”
The problem is, I like to think of Matrix and Enzo as the same character. When I see Matrix, I like to remember the first seasons, when he was still a little kid. Now with Enzo 2, I have to see them as two different characters.
“So the upshot is, I want him either killed or grown up to a different sprite. Because with the addition of Matrix, having a him and a kid Enzo just throws the whole balance of the show off.”
I still prefer to keep Enzo as a kid, two adult Enzos would be really weird to me.
Another thing that annoys me:
When Matrix came back to Mainframe, he seemed to be coming back to his old self (without the hyperactive annoying side of course). He never asked Bob to call him Matrix, Bob did it on his own to show how he respected what Enzo had become and then again he still called him Enzo a couple of times without any opposition from Matrix. I don’t think we heard any of the others (Dot, Mouse, Phong and even Megabyte) call him Matrix in the third season, did we? Matrix seemed to be accepting his old self again and it was awesome (don’t you love how he calls “Mr Pearson!” Enzo way?) Now with Enzo 2 around, everybody calls him Matrix to avoid confusion. I don’t think Dot would have ever called him Matrix if it wasn’t for that, nor would Matrix have asked that of her. In season 4, Matrix seemed to be back into his renegade attitude from the first episodes, and even worse. To me, Matrix will never be able to go back to his old self and to be a sane sprite with Enzo 2 around because, as you said it, you’ll have to make them very different. So Enzo 2 will be the guardian, sane sprite, Matrix will be the lost renegade, trigger-happy. But I like to see little Enzo inside Matrix, not apart from him!

Etoile - you make a very good point there. I think it should still be possible to show both how their characters diverge (or at least start to, I don’t see a need to rush this Enzo’s growing up) and their underlying sameness. Actually, I think that’d be the coolest way; showing how they are still the same person ought to point up the differences even more.

I’ve been a reboot fan since the VERY beginning, but I just am so curious, how can Reboot continue without the man behind Megabyte?! Rest in Peace Tony Jay

It will be hard, and won’t be as great as having Tony, but there are other deep voiced people out there and with some tweaks and filters it could sound pretty good.

When I said Enzo is my favorite character I also meant Matrix as well.
Also, about Enzo being annoying, I think someone once said he is only annoying as a result of bad scrip writting. I agree withe SHG in that it is possible to show the similarites between Matrix and Enzo. We can also show how unique.
Enzo and Matrix’s relationship is unique in that they are the same person but they are also “brothers.” I kind of see their relationship being similar to Sam and Dean Winchester from WB’s “Supernatural.”
I would like to see an older Enzo, but I don’t think it should be automatic but a gradual thing.
That is what I think anyway.

I would love to see how Enzo Mk. 2 grows up, but I agree that he should not do so abruptly, ’cause we never got to see Enzo Mk. 1 in any of the intermediate stages, and while the sudden jump ahead was cool the first time, we don’t want to repeat it.

I don’t know why I keep doing this, I am just making myself nervous. Okay about killing off Enzo…since someone else is doing the movies there is a chance that might happend a slight chance. However I do not agree with killing off Enzo nor do I agree that Matrix would be more sane when he was gone.
When has Matrix ever shown he was insane because of Enzo? Gavin gave him (somewhat) closear about Enzo. If anything Matrix probably sees him as his second chance. I can see Matrix as being more protective of Enzo as time goes by and remember Gavin brought Enzo back for a reason. Also I think the one who is hurting the most about the situation is Enzo 2 himself.
I don’t think he (Gavin) would do it because the fans wanted him to. When writing a series you have to plan things out, so Gavin probably saw him as either becoming a guardian or something else maybe a business man? Just coming something out of the blue for a series doesn’t usually work though there are manga writers who do that(Rumiko). It might work if the series was running for a little bit but a long series like InuYasha, it will wear thin.

Hi! It’s very cool that Reboot continue after the 2 great movie in 2001!
So, I would like to know if the next movie will be the continuation of the last movie My tow Bobs, because it has finish with many questions…
The news movies will be made by computer (same the 2 movies in 2001) or in new version cartoon as we see on the site?
Thank very much for your answer!

Methinks this blog could use a “read me first” FAQ to bring new people up to speed on the revival.
